Over 1,700 “Wild for a Cure” walkers turned out for the 7th annual Walk to Cure Diabetes at Greenfield Lake Park on Saturday, November 3, 2007. Preliminary walk results currently report $310,000 and counting for diabetes research with pledges still coming in. The beautiful day was filled with fun activities for walkers of all ages. This year’s Kid’s Korner was sponsored by the Wilmington Star News and activities included face painting, games, a moon bounce, goodie bags, popcorn and sugar free snow cones. Local celebrity personalities included Craig Carnesi with WECT – News Channel 6 and Foz & Nikki from Z 107.5 and Surf 98.3. This year’s Honorary Chair, John Evans fired the crowd up as the MC for the day. The annual t-shirt contest took place with many creative “Wild for the Cure” t-shirt designs. First place went to Liberty Healthcare in the corporate division and “Hannah’s Hope” in the family division. To get this year’s walkers ready, Gold’s Gym gave a pre-walk aerobic warm-up. After the official ribbon cutting, walkers had the option of walking 2 or 4 miles around Greenfield Lake. This year we saw a large increase of walkers from our four-legged friends. After finishing the Walk, attendees were served lunch donated from Texas Roadhouse, Pepsi and Coca-Cola. This year’s post-walk entertainment was provided by the local band “Then and Back.”
